Top 10 Horror Anime

Horror is a genre that we see quite often in the anime universe, but mostly, it doesn’t get portrayed properly. Most horror anime are not actually horrifying as they lack any kind of proper story progression and only rely on cheap jump-scares. Of course, there are also some gems out there that are able to fully captivate us through their amazing psychological stories that are riddled with horror. Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at the top 10 horror anime that will keep you up at night!

10. Mieruko Chan

At the 10th spot on my list is an anime series that most of you were probably not expecting to find on this list. Mieruko Chan is a horror-comedy anime. This anime puts its own unique spin on the horror genre by mixing it together with the genres of ecchi and comedy. What I really love about this show is the fact that the scary scenes are actually quite terrifying for the audience and the poor protagonist. We follow the story of a girl named Miko Yotsuya, who has suddenly gained the ability to see evil spirits all around her.

9. The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland is another horror anime that is meant for a more general audience, but I still wanted to put it on the list because of its unique concept and amazing story progression. In this anime, we follow the story of a bunch of orphans living together in Grace Field House. It seems like these kids are living a very happy life together with their caretaker that they refer to as mama. However, the lives of three orphans named Ema, Ray and Norman completely change when they discover the truth about their house. This place is actually a slaughterhouse, and these kids are being raised as food for the monsters!

8. Shiki

Here’s a horror anime for all you vampire fans out there. This mystery-horror anime is loved by fans all around the world because of its realistic and terrifying depiction of vampires. This tragic anime follows the story of a young doctor named Toshio Ozaki and a boy named Natsuno Yuuki. After the strange death of a girl named Megumi Shimizu, something brutal and strange starts to happen in the village of Sotoba. As Toshio goes to the village to understand the nature of this epidemic, he and Natsuno start working together. These two must work together in order to save the village of Sotoba and its residents from the clutches of the vampires.

7. Paranoia Agent

Paranoia Agent is a psychological-horror anime that is filled to the brim with mystery. Its detective-type storyline makes this anime very enjoyable for all kinds of audiences.

Something strange is happening in Musashino City that has all of its residents on edge. Known as Shounen Bat, a little kid wearing rollerblades and carrying a golden bat in his hands is going around the city beating up random strangers. And for some reason, the police are not able to catch up to him. Detectives Mitsuhiro Maniwa and Keiichi Ikari are currently trying to solve this mystery before matters get out of hand.

6. Junji Ito Collection

This entry right here could’ve easily been at the number one spot on my list, but the poor quality of this anime adaption really makes the work of Junji Ito suffer. While the manga is many times better and contains some of the most horrifying works of fiction ever created, the anime is also not too bad and can still be enjoyed if you don’t like reading manga. This anime contains multiple horror stories created by the talented manga author named Junji Ito, and some of these stories will definitely become fuel for your nightmares. Personally, I’d recommend that you should read the manga instead!

5. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

At the number 5th spot on my list is a horror anime that is not really liked much by most horror fans, but I still think that it is a terrifying watch. This anime lacks in terms of story, but it is still pretty scary and will keep most horror fans entertained. Corpse Party follows the story of nine different students that gather at their high school building at night in order to say farewell to a friend. They perform a small and harmless ritual hoping to stay friends forever. However, things quickly go south as the ritual seems to be connected to an old elementary school that was shut down after a series of horrifying murders.

4. Monster

Monster is a realistic and slow-paced horror anime that is very different from all the other entries on this list. There are no jump-scares or scary ghosts in this story, but it will still shake you to the core! This anime follows the story of a young doctor named Kenzou Tenma, who was leading a very successful life as a young doctor. Doctor Tenma’s entire life comes crashing down when he decides to perform life-saving surgery on a young boy named Johan Liebert and abandons the town’s mayor. While at the time, Tenma thought that he had done the right thing, he didn’t know that he had just saved the life of a monster.

3. When They Cry

When They Cry is a terrifying horror anime that disguises itself as an adorable rom-com. The anime starts off with a very light-hearted theme as it follows the story of a boy named Keiichi Maebara, who has just moved to the village of Hinamizawa. However, soon this horrifying series starts to show its true colors as it gets darker and darker with every new episode. What I truly love about When They Cry are all the twists and turns in the story that are just as unexpected for us as they are for the poor protagonist himself. This psychological horror series has a very complex plot that focuses on multiple timelines, and it has been represented perfectly in this show.

2. Another

Many would argue that I should’ve put another at the second spot on this list as the gore and terror in this anime is on a whole different level. In Another, we follow the story of a young boy named Kouichi Sakakibara that has just transferred to Yomiyama North Middle School. Kouichi finds the atmosphere of this new school to be quite weird as the entire class seems to completely ignore a strange girl named Mei Misaki. As Kouichi tries to understand the odd situation, many students and teachers start to mysteriously die all around him.

1. Perfect Blue

At the number one spot on my list of the best horror anime is a psychological entry that is a little hard to understand. This brilliant anime movie follows the internal struggles of a young girl named Mima Kirigoe as she tries to leave her life as a pop idol behind and become an actor instead. As if the stress of leaving her old life behind and gaining acceptance from all of her fans wasn’t enough, an obsessed psychopath starts to make Mima’s life a living hell. All the small disturbances in this girl’s life begin to add up, and the line between reality and fiction begins to fade.
