Steins;Gate Review
One of the Most Depressing Sci-Fi Anime
Steins;Gate is a fairly popular sci-fi anime that released all the way back in 2011. The anime has some of the most memorable characters of all time, and a pretty interesting story. While it just seems like a boring and cliché time travel anime at first, the show quickly develops into something special as you keep on watching. Not only is Steins;Gate a masterpiece in the genre of sci-fi and time travel, but it can also be called one of the most depressing sci-fi anime of all time.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the many reasons why we think that Steins;Gate is a must-watch anime that every fan of the genre needs to watch.
Plot and Story Progression
The plot of Steins;Gate follows the story of a mad and delusional scientist named Rintarou Okabe. Rintarou works together with his two equally strange fellow lab members called Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida. Together, they manage to build a mysterious microwave that can turn bananas into green gel. After a while, these three realize that the microwave is actually a time travel machine that is able to send emails into the past. Of course, Okabe gets quite excited because of this new invention. However, this scientist will soon learn just how horrifying time travel can be.
We’ll be honest, the plot itself doesn’t look all that interesting. We’ve seen many similar stories in the world of sci-fi that try to portray time travel in their own unique ways. However, what truly separates Steins;Gate from all the other sci-fi anime out there is its story progression. The story keeps on getting more and more complex with every new episode as Okabe and his gang find out the truth about the future of their world and try to save humanity.
The sci-fi anime starts to get truly depressing in the second season titled Steins;Gate Zero which is somewhat of a prequel story that takes place between the 22nd and 23rd episode of the first season.
Characters
The characters in Steins;Gate don’t seem all that interesting at first. However, the character development of all these characters is simply phenomenal! These characters learn from their mistakes and relive the same moments again and again in order to fix them. Throughout the many amazing episodes, we learn more regarding these characters and their personal struggles. I really love the fact that this show pays a lot of attention to the side characters as well.
Time Travel Done Right!
Time Travel shows usually leave a lot of plot holes and unexplainable details that seem quite odd. That is to be expected as time travel is not something that has been discovered in the real world. While Steins;Gate also has a few plot holes like many other time travel series, the show still manages to portray this strange thing in the best and most believable way possible.
Of course, something as powerful as time travel can’t come without some kind of consequences. The consequences of time travel in Steins;Gate are what make it such a depressing sci-fi anime. A simple and irrelevant change in the past events is able to change the future so dramatically that it’s almost terrifying! Sadly, Okabe suffers the most because of these consequences as the poor guy has to jump between different timelines in order to fix everything.
