Dr. Stone Review
The perfect blend of education and entertainment
Dr. Stone is something special. Even if you have not watched a lot of anime, it's not that hard to figure out just how unique and exceptional Dr. Stone actually is.
Even in a diverse and as varied genre of entertainment as anime, where ninjas in hidden villages run rampant, Pirates go on never-ending adventures, and even space monkeys save the world, Dr. Stone stands out as a unique show, the likes of which we have never seen before in the world of anime.
What's more, the Illustrator for the Dr. Stone manga is Boichi. Who, if you don't know, is well known for his epic art, and some of his more notable prior works include Sun-Ken Rock, Walkman, and Origin.
And the story is being done by the infamous Story King award winner, Inagaki Riichiro, who has written Dr. Stone as a love letter to science. And has managed to turn some of the most boring subjects in science into engaging—exhilarating experiences that we all can't help but fall in love with.
Plot and Story Progression
Dr. Stone is set in a world where a love confession is about to happen, the world is continuing its daily trade when suddenly a bright green light shines all over the globe and turns every single living human on Earth to Stone.
The humans petrified, stay stagnant, and to that, all of the developed world is taken back into nature over the course of 3700 years. Plastics dissolve, buildings crumble, and fauna takes over the once modern, developed cities of humanity.
Till one day, Senkuu, a young genius scientist, known as a walking encyclopedia, wakes up and is shocked by the state of the current world. After awakening his longtime friend, Taiju, through a concoction of acid and some brainpower, Senkuu awakens Tsukasa to save him and his friend from imminent danger. Now, planning to revive the modern civilization and get humanity back on its feet, Senkuu plans on re-inventing the lost inventions and allow the humans to start over with all the 4 million years of knowledge that was seemingly lost due to the petrification incident.
But things don't go as planned, and Tsukasa betrays Senkuu by stating that reviving all of humanity would just lead back into a conflict and wars that plagued the modern world before. Adamant on his vision to save everyone, Senkuu and Tsukasa have different ideas of humanity's future, which makes them go into an all-out war with one another.
Plunging the new, revived world into a massive conflict, a war between Science and Primal—conflict between advancement in human civilization and the primitive wild nature of the living creatures that will shape the new history of humanity.
Dr. Stone tells a fairly simple post-apocalyptic story, but the way events are presented by Inagaki in Boichi's art. Dr. Stone stands out as not just another anime but an important piece of anime literature that has the potential to shape the anime industry for the better.
Charaktere
Just at first glance, you can easily figure out that the characters in Dr. Stone are unique. Aside from their epic characters design by the Boichi, the anime does a great job in showing just how amazing and exciting each character in Dr. Stone actually is.
From the brainstorming, highly intelligent Senkuu to his normal and hard-working best friend Taiju; From the hard-working old craftsman to the beautiful and strong Kohaku. And even Taiju's longtime crush, Yuzuriha, who loves to craft Dr. Stone presents a myriad of unique characters that we can't help but relate to, and even find ourselves rooting for them during conflicts.
Final thoughts
It has been a very long time since we have gotten such a remarkable story in anime. And the care and due diligence that TMS has animated Dr. Stone with is a refresher to just show amazing anime can get. It is one of the unique anime out there that has made science look incredibly fun and exciting for adults. It is hard to find an anime or just any other piece of entertainment that is able to not only touch your soul as a human but also make you realize the importance of science. And just how it has shaped humans over the years and makes all that look interesting and feel like something you care about.
In all and all, Dr. Stone is clearly a must watch anime of the decade in our books that you definitely need to check out.
