Why Nico Robin should get more attention in One Piece
The greatest battle for supremacy in Pirate History!
Nico Robin’s significance in the One Piece world cannot be underemphasized. Currently, we do not know about the true history of the One Piece world, because hardly anyone does. The exceptions are surely The Five Elders as well as Im.
Even though Dr. Clover had only uncovered the name of the Ancient Kingdom and that it exists, he was still shot to death. And so were most of the civilians of Ohara, even they had nothing to do with it. They were still burned to death.
It was quite literally a massacre.
But regardless of what happened in Ohara. Nico Robin survived.
The World Government couldn’t erase the existence of Ohara as Admiral Akainu couldn’t kill all of the civilians. Dubbed as the “Demon Child,” Nico Robin survived and in turn became a target for bounty hunters.
Even then she continued to survive.
Whatever happened, she continued on living. Which is why it was so heartbreaking to finally say it again, “I want to live.”
Oda executed her character arc quite masterfully.
First, introduced as a mysterious antagonist, her actions further intrigued the viewers. Gradually, she became a solid member of the Straw Hat pirates, but the element of mystery was still there, and let’s be honest, it still is.
Why is she so obsessed with history? Just what is the history, and why does her dream have so many enemies?
However, as all of this went on, she was aware that this happiness, this family like atmosphere, it’s all temporary. Soon enough, she’ll become a major hindrance to the journey of the people she came to see as her, “Nakama.”
It was all heartbreaking, but of course, at that point, we didn’t know who Nico Robin really was?
She always had the tendency to just fade into the background. Nobody could’ve known that right after the Sky Island Saga, a conflict of such an astounding magnitude will be waiting for our crew.
The Water 7 & Ennies Lobby Saga was a Masterpiece. It is still the absolute peak of what a Straw Hat centric arc could be.
Not only did we get more background on Nico Robin, we also gained major insights on what the World Government really is, the Marine Admirals who work directly under them, and how, while we were enjoying the adventure filled journey of the Straw Hats, a much more dark and sinister plot line was building up in the background.
And much more than anything else, the straw hat pirates finally started acting like a Real Pirate crew. The road to becoming a Pirate King isn’t all fun and games after all.
However, from what we know of the One Piece story right now, the Ennies Lobby may very well still be the prequel of what is going to happen next.
There will definitely be spoilers from the latest manga chapters, so proceed with caution if you are anime-only.
Now, considering all that Robin is capable of, it’s only befitting that the fandom will feel rather disappointed at how much she has faded into the background.
She spent most of her life manipulating people from the shadows, but she barely ever does that anymore.
Maybe because, finally, there are people she can wholeheartedly trust that she no longer feels the need to manipulate anyone.
Robin was also the second in command of the Baroque Works, she helped oversee a magnanimous force of pirates, and also oversaw missions all across the first half of the grand line.
During the Time Skip, Robin trained for two continuous years with the organization, which is by far, the greatest threat to the rule of the World Government, the organization that directly opposes them, the Revolutionary Army, lead by the Revolutionary, “Monkey D. Dragon.”
She must’ve learned some truly astounding stuff about reconnaissance in addition to improving her fighting prowess. She can read the poneglyphs, has a broken devil fruit, and a level of depth that parallels that of most any main character.
When you consider all of that, and much more. It makes sense to think that she is being underused.
Oda can do so much more with her character.
And yes, you are exactly right.
However, things are different now then they were before.
Even though there has almost been a decade since the post time skip initiated its publication. In the One Piece world, it’s only been a month or so since the Straw Hats entered the New World.
The way One Piece makes something meaningful is by connecting the past to the current events and then further expanding upon them. Both Punk Hazard and Dressrosa just didn’t have the type of content Oda could’ve used to do something truly substantial with it.
That is not to say, they couldn’t have used more Robin.
It’s just that Oda must’ve been saving Robin for something else. Just like how he had been under utilizing Sanji, just so he can blow everyone’s minds with the stuff we experienced in the past few chapters. Which to be honest, genuinely moved me to tears.
Robin’s big Post-time skip storyline has definitely been building in the background. We still don’t know about her conversation with Dragon, or rather, we don’t know much about what she was doing during the time skip.
In Zou, when Inuarashi revealed how to get to the final island, Nekomamushi states how the major factions of the New World will aim for Nico Robin.
Of course, she no longer fears anything considering how she now has dependable allies whom she can count on.
But it was still something that’ll happen, Nico Robin will become the target of anyone who seeks to either hide or discern, not just the true history, but also the ancient weapons.
And we know who they are.
There is the World Government who wants to erase Nico Robin. Her very existence is an anomaly, she is quite literally, the “Demon Child.” Oda further emphasized this point in the 1021st chapter, when Robin wholeheartedly accepted what the world thought of her.
There is Kaido and Big Mom who want her discerning abilities to uncover the true location of Laugh Tale and beyond.
There is BlackBeard, and as always, nobody knows what he is up to.
The Revolutionary Army is already affiliated with Nico Robin. For them, she is the “Light of Hope.” A beacon who is a fundamental factor in bringing about the eventual Dawn of the World.
So as things are, all of the great powers of the One Piece world cannot ignore the existence of Nico Robin. Nor can Oda.
Things are finally heating up.
Chapter 1020th and 1021st brought many to tears considering how we finally got the Big Robin fight. The fight, as well as the story behind it, was both emotional and mesmerizing. Truly surreal to see.
However, while Robin had her Big Post-timeskip moment. The Big stuff is still about to happen, and Oda has been very vivid in trying to portray this fact.
Rob Lucci is on his way, and he has ordered CP-0 to catch Nico Robin.
Add that with the fact that Kaido and Big Mom already have their eyes on her, and you get back to Nekomamushi’s statement in the Zou arc.
“When the time comes… Big Players from all over the world will be after Yougara.”
To which, Robin pleasantly replies, “I don’t mind. After all… I’ve got powerful friends who will protect me.”
Which is exactly right.
Regardless of whether it happens during or after Wano.
Nico Robin will be targeted… You know what I mean, don’t you?
The greatest all of Pirate History. “The Battle for Supremacy.” shall begin!
And the very key to the legendary treasure, Nico Robin. Will be the prime focus.
That’s right folks.
We have been waiting long enough, but we need not wait anymore.
The time has come when our beloved Nico Robin will get all the attention she deserves.
The One Piece Endgame will be Epic!
