Bleach Reboot: What to Expect and Everything We Know So Far

With over 9 years since the last episode of Bleach aired, most fans went on to read the manga for Bleach, to experience the appropriate conclusion to one of the biggest anime of all time. Luckily though, Tite Kubo and his team officially announced the reboot for Bleach and its season 17 release for 2021!

The anime originally had a runtime of 8 years, airing from October 2004 to March 2012. Bleach has a total of 366 episodes prior to its reboot. Considering Bleach was amongst the widely-acclaimed ‘Big Three’, the excitement in the anime community has never been this high. And without further ado, let’s take a look at what we can expect from the season 17 of Bleach!

Bleach Reboot Official Announcement

The announcement for the reboot was made on the 20th anniversary of Bleach’s manga in March 2020. Back then, the Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 17 revealed that the season 17 for Bleach was currently under production. The anime would be adapting the final arc of the manga series — the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. The entire Bleach fanbase was in a frenzy following the announcement, mainly due to the anticlimactic ending the anime had. Additionally, the anime will be releasing completely uncensored. Therefore, viewers can expect to see plenty of raw action and violence without any filtering.

Bleach Season 17 Release Date

Official Release Date: 2021

The production team has officially confirmed that the reboot would begin airing sometime this year. While the exact release has not been announced, we believe it would release around mid-November or early December. This is due to the possibility of airing the show in line with Hikarie Hall art exhibition. Several websites have similar speculations, while some believe it will not release this year at all.

Needless to say, these are mere speculations and not official dates.

Bleach Reboot Plot

As mentioned before, the upcoming reboot will be adapting the final arc of the Bleach manga, namely the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.

Before diving straight into the plot details, let’s have a quick recap of how the anime ended before. Ichigo Kurosaki had lost his powers following his battle with Aizen. We see him struggling to regain his Shinigami powers, with Rukia Kuchiki making her appearance and helping him gain his powers once again.

In the meantime, the entirety of Hollows has disappeared for some reason and no one knows what may have caused this to happen. Though the disappearance may seem like a good thing to most, it most certainly isn’t. The hard-fought union is being crushed and a new foe has appeared. A group named Wandenreich (directly translating to the Invisible Empire) has waged war against the Soul Society, dominating and annihilating the captains, one by one. Who is this powerful adversary? We all know them and believed they had ceased to exist. Yes, it is the Quincies.

Following their defeat against the Shinigami roughly 1000 years ago, the remaining Quincy vanished from the human world and took refuge in the Seireitei. Their profound abilities with Reishi allowed them to isolate themselves from the other world, helping them conceal their existence. Now, the Quincy and the Wandenreich aims to use the abundantly available Reishi in the Soul Society, hence, the war. They had been waiting an entire millennium, orchestrating their attack while becoming even stronger each day, just to harness the Reishi in Soul Society.

The Wandenreich will be going all-out, destroying anything and anyone who dares step in their way. Season 17 will allow the fans to see Ichigo become even stronger with extensive training, alongside his allies from the human world and the Soul Society. We might even see some characters unexpectedly make their return! The question, though, still remains: Will Ichigo be able to overcome the odds and save the world once again? Or will he fall along with the Soul Society?
