Anime with Overpowered Main Characters
The ambitious Shonen protagonists are great, but do you know what's even better? Badass OP MCs that can beat anybody with eyes closed. Why? Because that's a lot more fun than being the underdog who gradually develops their character.
Overpowered protagonists capable of anything might feel redundant in an anime plot, but these series are nonetheless enjoyable to watch.
So, here’s a recommendation of the best anime with overpowered main characters.
10. Kirigaya Kazuto (Sword Art Online SAO)
Kirito and thousands of other players were trapped in a VR MMO called SAO with only two options: clear all 100 floors and defeat the final boss, or die. But death in the game also meant death in the real world.
In the first month of being trapped, almost 2000 gamers died as they couldn't figure out how the game works. Kirito, on the other hand, was a beta tester and has a great understanding of how VR games work, allowing him to level up and earn a lot of items, making him an OP character.
Kirito is one hell of a swordsman, gamer but all in all a badass OP MC. So, if you're looking for an RPG anime with an OP MC, look no more, SAO is the one for you.
9. Sora and Shiro (No Game No Life)
Life is like a game, if you play your cards right, then you’ll win. This is perhaps more of a figurative statement, but it is how No Game No Life is structured.
The story revolves around two siblings, Sora and Shiron. Shiro is mathematically inclined, while her brother, Sora is psychologically oriented, making this duo a truly overpowered genius. Together, they are practically invincible.
After being summoned to a world where games are used to decide literally everything, this duo set out on a quest to tackle some challenging games with god-like players.
8. Tatsuya Shiba (Irregular at Magic High School)
In this series, the principles of modern fantasy are redefined. Magic, formerly thought to be a fairytale element, has evolved into a science-based technology.
I'm sure you're expecting the MC to be a powerful wizard, but that isn't the case. Tatsuya has almost no magical abilities, but his superior technical knowledge, fighting abilities and his silver horn gun place him in high regard. He possesses the power to counteract magic in a similar way to Asta from Black Clover.
Tatsuya is usually reserved and calm, with little to no emotion. He looks and acts like a human robot (in certain ways he is), but a single scratch on his sister Miyuki can transform him into a monster.
7. Alucard (Hellsing Ultimate)
Spelling the MC name backward, you get “Dracula” which is awesome since he’s a vampire. And an incredible one I might add!
In a fight for humanity’s survival, Alucard, despite being a vampire works with the Hellsing organization to exterminate his brethren.
I can't recall a single case where Alucard was actually losing unless he faked it for laughs, you know crazy op characters can be. But after he’s done joking around, you'll wish you'd never met a monster like him.
6. Ainz Ooal Gown (Overlord)
There's just something about strong characters' names that I find fascinating. They are often very accurate and satisfying! Just how cool does Ainz Ooal Gown sound?! Especially when mentioned by the character himself.
Similar to sword art online (SAO), Overlord tells the story of a top MMO gamer who got trapped in a game. Despite having a ridiculously overpowered main character this series still turns out great since it’s a typical “dominate the world as the evil character” story with the main protagonist being the “evil” overlord.
5. Rimuru Tempest (That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime)
Lonely Satoru Mikami meets an untimely death and is reincarnated as a slime into a magical realm with a new name, Rimuru.
Rimuru levels up to become one of the strongest in the realm all thanks to Great Sage's sophisticated AI and his Predator ability, which allows him to ingest anything and absorb its skills.
Rimuru Tempest is, in my opinion, one of the strongest characters in anime history and Tensura is by far one of the best well-executed isekai series out there. It's a lighthearted, modern fantasy that features a unique blend of action, harem, and humor. You just can’t go wrong with Tensura.
4. Shigeo Kageyama (Mob psycho 100)
Do you enjoy wacky-looking main characters who are hilariously overpowered? Then Mob is your guy!
You don’t want to see Mob get maxed out 100%; He goes from an introverted eight-grader to a complete badass.
Mob Psycho 100 is the apex of outstanding storytelling, animation, pacing, character development, comedy, and, of course, ACTION. One of my favorites!
3. Escanor, Meliodas (Seven Deadly Sins)
Now, this is a tough one! I'm torn between Escanor and Meliodas and just can't decide. As you know, they’re both crazy op.
The subject of who is the stronger has sparked a lot of debate among the fans. And I believe they are both deserving of recognition on this list. So, I'll just go ahead and include them both.
There you have it. The Lion's Sin of Pride, Escanor and Dragon's Sin of Wrath, Meliodas.
2. Saitama (One Punch Man)
One punch man definitely needs no introduction. Saitama is the kind of MC that comes to mind when talking about op characters. Just who doesn’t know this bald funny looking op character.
The entire idea of the show is that Saitama never breaks a sweat, no matter who he's up against. He's so powerful that just by existing, he's transformed an epic action shounen into a comedic series.
1. Son Goku (Dragon Ball)
Another character you definitely saw coming. Whenever a new op character appears, the question is always whether or not they can defeat Goku.
Goku is the epitome of power cliffing, powerful enough to be in league with actual gods. With a fanbase that literally worships him and considers him the strongest in the whole animeverse.
